The St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), led by Dr. Terrance Drew, has won the Federal General Elections of the two sister islands held on August 5, 2022. The party won 6 of the 11 contested seats in the National Assembly. Dr. Drew will be sworn in as the country’s fourth prime minister, following Dr. the Hon Timothy Harris.
The snap elections came three years earlier than expected after the dissolution of the former parliament in May, 2022. For the purposes of data collection and quality reporting, the elections were monitored by an international coalition including members of local NGOs, the Organization of American States, and CARICOM.
The National Assembly consists of 15 seats, with 11 seats reserved for the elected leaders of the country’s single-member constituencies, three designated by the Governor-General, and one seat reserved for the Attorney-General.
Of the 11 constituencies that were renewed, the island of St. Kitts is home to eight. The SKNLP came out as the clear victors, winning six seats in the National Assembly. Members of the SKNLP include Dr. Drew, who won Constituency #8 with more than 60% of the votes, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, Marsha Henderson, Konris Maynard, Samal Duggins, and Dr. Denzil Douglas. Dr. Timothy Harris, Leader of the People’s Labour Party (PLP) was elected to lead Constituency #7, and Shawn Richards, Leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) won Constituency #5.
On the island of Nevis, the three open seats were all won by representatives of the Concerned Citizens Movement, led by Mark Brantley. Eric Evelyn and Alexis Jeffers of Nevis were elected to the remaining two seats.
The new National Assembly has received public support from the United States government and has promised to bring better education, improved healthcare, and more affordable housing to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
